Requiem for a Tournament Washed Away (Editorial)

This is not what we wanted.

I shouldn't be typing this from San Antonio.  I should be with my colleagues celebrating the successes of running the tournament.  Celebrations from our officials who deserve praise for making these tournaments happen.  The celebrations that 2 national champions and 2 open champions should be sharing with their teams now.  The celebrations that should have included medals...medals that I saw being packed away before I left Phoenix, never to be worn.

I shouldn't have thought about writing this as I was lifting off from DFW heading for San Antonio and seeing out of my window 2, lit soccer fields which reminded me of what we were missing tonight.

We didn't want the rain.

The rain that fell almost continuously for 31 hours.  The rain that postponed both Friday AND Saturday high school football playoffs.  The rain that made the fields unplayable and unsafe.

The rain that canceled the tournament and led to frustration by all and anger by few.  The few who suggested that we ignore risk involved and play on.  Ignore the same risk that we as professionals deal with for club practices, club travel and club games ALL of the time.  Something that would be unnatural for us to do.

The few who suggested we have an alternate rain plan. A plan we had and did not want to use.  A different plan that involved other field locations without agreements in place.  Agreements that take place years in advance, not days.  A different plan that would not have been free.  A different plan that would drive up the cost of the tournament.  A different plan we don't want.

The few who wouldn't have minded tearing up the fields rendering them unplayable for weeks.  Unplayable for youth flag football games to take place this Monday, for a soccer tournament next weekend, for 4 soccer tournaments still to be played in December and 2 more flag football days to be played in December.

Damaging fields are one thing (and costly)...damaging a relationship is another.  The relationship with Reach 11 that has been strong and still is. The relationship that actually allowed us to have a plan for Saturday and waiting until the last minute to cancel when other places wouldn't have given anyone a chance.  The relationship that will continue now to hopefully play a future tournament there without the rain.  Like the 2009-2011 tournaments.  Like the ones we know we will have again.  A relationship that is not easy to create with field complexes across the nation.  It is the reason we come back.  Because they want us here but not at the cost of damaging their resource which we could have done. A decision that could have ended that relationship...which we don't want.

The staff didn't want this.

We didn't want to make this decision.  We didn't want to hang out and tour Phoenix.  We didn't want to play games, tell stories, watch football games.  We didn't want to create the bonds we will cherish forever in the way it happened.  Those bonds and moments should have taken place after 11pm when we got back to the hotel and during the games that should have been played.

What we wanted were the long days.  Waking up at 6am and working from about 6:45am until 11pm with our fellow officials. We wanted to watch great soccer.  We wanted to get to know the great student-athletes that make this tournament great.  We wanted great stories to occur from the competition on the field.  We wanted to celebrate our achievements but more importantly we wanted to celebrate YOUR achievements.

But it didn't happen.

All of us are frustrated and some are angry and we understand.  We share the frustration and some of the anger. We will discuss how we can make this right.  Discussions that will take place when everyone returns to their home bases and may be decided after the holiday.

Rest assured that we care about this tournament.  It is the reason many of us come back and will always try to be back. The atmosphere is unmatched in any other sport in my opinion.  The games, the officials, the teams, the staff, the fans, the families, the parents, the wins, the losses, the draws, the tiebreakers, the competition, the sportsmanship, the teamwork, the struggle, the long days, the cold nights, the early mornings, the late nights, the all-tournament teams, the most outstanding goal keeper, the MVPs, the national champions and everything else that makes this tournament unique and awesome.

This is what we wanted...this is what we want when we return next year to Memphis.  I hope to see you there.

TOURNAMENT CANCELLATION STATEMENT FROM NIRSA

Update, Saturday 6:20am: TOURNAMENT CANCELLED

NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, the NIRSA Championship Series, and the Reach 11 Soccer Complex hoped and planned to see the completion of this anniversary tournament. Unfortunately, persistent rain has rendered the condition of the fields unsafe and unplayable.
Only once before in the 20-year history of this tournament has weather forced the discontinuation of tournament play. However, ensuring the safety of all participants, officials, and staff has always been paramount and we are sorry to inform you that the remainder of the tournament has been cancelled.
This decision was not reached lightly and while it was not the outcome any of us were hoping for, we are truly thankful for the teams, families, spectators, officials, volunteers, and institutions for their support of NIRSA’s National Soccer Championships. Please travel home safely and we hope to see you next year!

TOURNAMENT CANCELLED

Details soon.

Modified Schedule as of 8p on Friday

Modified tournament schedule for Saturday is now posted HERE.
Info will be updated as necessary tomorrow morning.

Good night and hope to see you tomorrow morning!

Editorial

The following is an editorial by the blogger:

The rain played havoc with our schedule this weekend. It is possible that the rain could do more than just shorten the tournament. We hope that isn't the case.

The rain has caused the cancellation of the Consolation rounds of the tournament, caused remaining pool play games in Open to be decided by PKs, caused the Round of 16 games in both Men's and Women's Championships to be decided by PKs and forced remaining bracket play games to be reduced to 25 minutes halves with 3 min halftimes.

The announced schedule is not ideal.  It is a decision not taken lightly by the NIRSA staff.  It was the best that could be offered with the situation at hand. The amount of rain caused the fields to become unplayable. The water seen caused puddles to form in sections of the middle of some fields while causing rivers to form near the touchlines.

There are 2 things to consider:

1. Safety of participants AND officials.  We will not jeopardize the safety of either in order to play the tournament. Playing on fields that are as saturated as the fields were today would have caused play to be erratic, unpredictable and unsafe.  The middle of the fields were soft and the touchlines filled with water.  We would not want injuries to occur for both players and officials due to the conditions.

2. The Reach 11 Field Complex.  They have other tournaments throughout the year and the relationship we have with them is outstanding.  We enjoyed playing in near perfect conditions from 2009-2011.  They enjoy having us.  But we are just one of their tournaments that they host.  If we damage multiple fields due to playing on wet fields, we risk losing this place as a host in the future.  We do not want that to happen.  The schedule was a compromise of both limiting the amount of fields we can use to minimize impact and trying our best to conduct a viable tournament.  We thank them for allowing this compromise to happen.  Without their cooperation and support from our gracious hosts, we may have had a total cancelation.

That being said...the rain could still force other decisions to be made.  Those decisions will be made in the morning.  In the meantime, we are hoping that we will be able to play and are planning as such to do so with the modified schedule.

It is not ideal.  Other solutions were considered and not viable.  I know most of you are frustrated.  Trust me when I say that we are all equally frustrated with you with this situation.  And all we can do is hope to make the best of it tomorrow.

Be safe and have a good night and I hope to have news for you tomorrow morning that we will be at the Reach 11 Complex for the conclusion of our tournament.

Unlike the women's Championship division, the men's national champion is back to defend their title.  Michigan State will battle in Pool H to try and win back-to-back national titles.  But who else is there that will try and stop them.

Pool A features Penn State (take your shoes off...) who was a quarterfinalist last year, Virginia Tech who reached the Round of 16 last year and Rice.

Pool B has Weber State who was a finalist last year (after losing to Michigan State on Kicks from the Mark), Northeastern who we last saw in the Open semifinals in 2011 and Texas A&M who was a quarterfinalist from last year.

Pool C contains Ohio State who reached the Round of 16 last year, Colorado School of Mines who also reached the Round of 16 last year and UCSB who we last saw in the 2011 quarterfinals.

Pool D has Texas who reached the Round of 16 last year, UC Davis and Cincinnati who reached the Open semifinals last year.

Pool E features Colorado State who reached the Open quarterfinals last year, Kansas State who we last saw in the 2007 consolation quarterfinals and Michigan who we last saw in the 2011 consolation quarterfinals.

Pool F has Florida who reached the consolation final last year, Illinois who reached the quarterfinals last year and UTEP.

Pool G contains Georgia who reached the Round of 16 last year, Colorado who also reached the Round of 16 and Missouri who reached Open quarterfinals last year.

Pool H features Michigan State, defending national champion, Delaware 2011 consolation quarterfinalist and Cal Poly who reached the semifinals last year.

Looking at the pools it appears Michigan State might have a fight on their hands in their own pool.  Will they have enough to go all the way again?

Men's Championship Division play begins at 8am on Thursday with Michigan State opening their defense against Cal Poly against 9:45am.
