TOURNAMENT CANCELLATION STATEMENT FROM NIRSA

Update, Saturday 6:20am: TOURNAMENT CANCELLED

NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, the NIRSA Championship Series, and the Reach 11 Soccer Complex hoped and planned to see the completion of this anniversary tournament. Unfortunately, persistent rain has rendered the condition of the fields unsafe and unplayable.
Only once before in the 20-year history of this tournament has weather forced the discontinuation of tournament play. However, ensuring the safety of all participants, officials, and staff has always been paramount and we are sorry to inform you that the remainder of the tournament has been cancelled.
This decision was not reached lightly and while it was not the outcome any of us were hoping for, we are truly thankful for the teams, families, spectators, officials, volunteers, and institutions for their support of NIRSA’s National Soccer Championships. Please travel home safely and we hope to see you next year!

  1. Yeah, everyone wins. Orange slices for all. This doesn't make the sport look ridiculous at all. This is soccer, snow, sleet, RAIN, we play. Precious fields too important.

  2. NIRSA is a joke. "Please travel home safely and we hope to see you next year!"... How about you remit the fees paid by every institution that was entered into this tournament and pay the travel/lodging costs incurred by every player/family member who wasted their weekend coming out here and then we'll see about next year-- otherwise, go f**k yourself!

  3. NIRSA has no control over the weather or poor/unsafe field conditions, commentators! This group runs an extremely top-notch tournament year after year, and though, yes, we are all disappointed, the decision to cancel was not entered into lightly.
Do I wish I could watch more soccer being played today? OF COURSE! Am I bummed the tournament had to be cancelled? Yes, very! Do I blame the tournament coordinators for how this turned out? No!! That would be ridiculous.

    1. It was really top notch this year... I particularly loved how a modified schedule was released on Friday knowing full well that there was a 100% chance of rain last night through today and that there would be no difference between today and yesterday in terms of the field conditions... All of which could have and should have been planned for at the start of the week. Very top notch, though. These games could have been played out on artificial turf fields or at a facility that was less concerned about its fields. Don't give me this unsafe crap, either. You sound like you work for the organization anyway, which means you stand to earn a profit while the rest of us get to return to our respective states with a hole in our pocket and nothing to show for ourselves. Thanks a lot for such careful preparation!

    2. No person here earns a profit.

This year the rain got us. It is disappointing.

    3. Well, then I guess you're just incompetent when it comes to handling and directing other people's money.... that's so much better.

In the future, I will encourage every player and every parent to blackball Reach 11 from any consideration for any tournaments and events to be held there.

  4. Rain is not an act of god. The tournament was cancelled because NIRSA scheduled the tournament with a venue which didn't want their precious fields scarred. I am certain every player in this tournament has played in rain before. NIRSA should partially refund the teams for its mistake.

  5. Soccer fields are meant to be played on...not treated like finely manicured golf course greens or estate grounds. That being said, the fact that you couldn't at least reserve a few of the fields including the artificial turf field is ridiculous. That would have left them with up to 15 of their precious fields untouched and you can't tell me that wouldn't be enough to satisfy their other obligations.

On a side note, this is how my seniors get to end their final season... thanks for nothing.

P.S. The sun is coming out...

  6. In depth analysis of Soccer tournaments can be an enriching experience. Given that its influence pervades our society, it is yet to receive proper recognition for laying the foundations of democracy. It is an unfortunate consequence of our civilizations history that Soccer tournaments is rarely given rational consideration by socialists, obviously
